This book was the first on all five of the great deserts of North America. After forty years of exploring these deserts on foot, on burro back, and by car, Mr. Jaeger has presented his accumulated informatino in the scientific, yet highly readable style.
The five deserts of North America - the Chihuahuan, Sonoran, Navahoan, Mohavean, and the Great Basin - extend from central Mexico almost to the border of Canada. To be called a desert, a geographical area must satisfy certain conditions as to weather, and although the five in North America have many characteristics in common, the author shows that each desert has its definite individuality in its plant and animal life, climate, land formation, and geologic history. Nondetailed maps give a quick view of the general boundaries, and the text suggests routes useful for the traveler, the studen, and the explorer.
There is a wealth of illustrative material: over 350 line drawings of insects, reptiles, mammals, birds, plants; and numerous pages of photographic illustrations and maps.
This book is new, but it has some shelf wear on the dust jacket, which comes from being moved around here and there in the last 50 years.
