Cactus Country is a celebration and exploration of the American deserts, in particular the six desert "provinces" of Western North America: Mojave, Colorado, Sonora, Chihuahua, Great Basin, and Painted. This visual and aesthetic tour through the beauty of the desert southwest includes full-color photos that portray not only the unusual and stark imagery of these places, but also the unique flora and fauna of the arid lands. The author took many of these photographs during the unusually wet spring of 1995, when the cactus and wildflowers were in their full glory.

Intended for use as a travel guide as well, Cactus Country gives practical information on where to go and what to see in each region. Every national park, monument and preserve in the desert southwest is listed, and detailed information on specific natural history, human history and suggested hikes is included in these sections.
